I'm rebuilding my GSR tranny, since I swapped out the gear housing, the original AQ differential trust shim is way too loose. I don't even get a preload reading on the torque wrench. The AQ shim new should be 0.0638" thick, but I measured the used one to only be on average 0.0630".
Should I just shoot to the thickest shim, AX which is 0.0720" and 7 shim sizes thicker. According to the manual, preload should be 22 lb.f - inch, and every shim size thicker yields 2.6-3.5 lb.f - inch increase in tapered bearing preload.
Also, are you suppose to lubricate the bearings and race before you measure the preload? My manual doesn't mention if you should or shouldn't. My bearings have some residual oil left on them, but the races are clean of oil, I'm worried the oil maybe giving me inaccurate 0 preload readings.

I've never done tapered bearings in a B tranny, all the GSR/ITR's I've worked on had normal 40x19.5x80 bearings, makes life easy!

This is out of a 95 GSR, what year did they switch to the normal ball bearing?

No idea, I have one on the bench now, but had to destroy the case to get it open.

Lock ring would not release, too much trash from bearings to allow the race to slide out of outer case, so I cut away the case.

Let me know if you need a case, I have a blown LS tranny I can ship the case to you. The only thing is the case needs a thread repaired for one of the top tranny mount bolts. Nothing a little weld and a tap wouldn't fix.
Also, any idea if the bearings should be lubed or cleaned with solvent and dried before measuring preload?

I ALWAYS Clean the bearings, blow dry, then lube with 10w30......ALWAYS!!!!!
No need for the case, I was given a LS from same person....with a broken mount tab.
Easily gonna be $500 in parts to mate these two, or a B16 tranny locally for $500 and I could drop in the LS 5th gear.
I hate B trannys and cheap folks.....they just don't mix.

Yeah, I cleaned, dried, and lubed the bearings, but I wasn't sure if the bearings should be dry when measuring preload specs. But come to think of it, you wouldn't want the bearings to be dry on startup, so measuring the preload should be done in normal conditions as well right?
Yeah, tranny parts are expensive. I've just spent close to $1500 in replacement parts on this tranny. Plus $300 for the tranny itself.
It's a GSR tranny with 4.9 FD, all new OEM sleeves, hubs, syncros, 3rd gear, and LS 5th gears.

It'll be easier for you to just switch over to the ball bearings. The only time I keep the needle bearings is if its an F/H trans.

Only another $80 for the two bearings, wait until you have to buy a bunch of shims.

So If I switch to the ball bearing, I don't have to reshim the casing since it was originally an LS tranny case?

You do need to shim, but its easier with the ball bearings.

So if I switch to the ball bearing, do I go back to the 80mm style washer that the LS casing originally had?

Yes.
I have quite a selection of 1.30-1.45mm leftovers.
